My college was Judson College, Marion, Alabama, 6 miles from where CORETTA Scott King was born, and 15 miles from Selma, Alabama, where an important March took place. Judson was started my Rev. Milo P. Jewett in 1838, who later started Vassar in New York State 1868. Judson was closed although pastor’s daughters had free tuition, they wanted no part in a women’s college that was progressive, with equality for all under the Constitution and laws of the land. Odd that Vassar, the place of Ann Hathaway and Meryl Streep would be connected to a Southern Women’s college that is no more.
So many lovely towns and small cities in the Finger Lakes, I do miss the area. There are also hundreds of wineries with award-winning offerings plus hotels, B&B's, and restaurants. There are a lot of Amish and Mennonite homesteads in the Penn Yan area, watch out for horse-drawn vehicles. Cornel University (and Ithaca College) are at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake. Owego is on the southern edge of what is considered the Finger Lakes region and if you travel north you will find that the Finger Lakes are also close to the Great Lakes and larger cities such as Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo. I always urge those visiting NY to not just stop at Niagara Falls or NYC, but venture into some of the most lovely lands you will see anywhere in western, central and upstate NY. It is particularly spectacular in the fall and Columbus Day Weekend is the busiest of the year, so book way in advance if you are planning to travel there during that timeframe. Thanks for the travelogue.
Thank you so much for posting this visit to a lovely and historic NYS town. You do such a great job in your videos - both in talking about what you experience, and in the video filming itself. You provide just the right amount of detail. The feeling is warm and intimate, as though the viewer is there with you, in real life.
I loved this presentation. NYS has so much to offer that most people are unaware of that don't live here. We are blessed to live in such a diverse, lovely area.
My hometown!! Carol is my sis-in-law. Early Owego Antique used to be JJ Newberry. It had a lunch and ice cream bar. I remember they had balloons behind the counter. You could take a turn throwing a dart at the balloons and if you popped one, you’d receive whatever discount was on the paper inside the balloon.
This was a good escape into a charming town of restored old buildings and shops. Please do more. I live in MA and this looks like an interesting place to visit. Loved the sign "Unattended children will be given Espresso and a free kitten." ❤
Thank you for doing such a beautiful job in covering my hometown. Been to the Parkview many times but was always curious as to what it looks like upstairs. I’m so proud of my little hometown and the way the community came together to rebuild and restore after the flood in 2012.
As a recently former resident of the area, I love this video. I made my own little video of Owego when they had the 'largest' peace sign made there. The Fireman's fountain is a very unique piece that belongs to the town. Next time you're there be sure to look up the history of that.
My goodness, Summer! I have been watching this channel for a long time; I've spent decades as a gardener who focuses on creating habitat in the home garden, so your usual type of content is what keeps me coming back. But today's video was such a wonderful surprise! It was captivating and wholly absorbing from beginning to end. I have lived most of my life in South-Eastern Pennsylvania, and, as a child, I've fished and swam in the Susquehanna with my grandfather. This mighty river has been part of my life in ways small and large since I was born. And all that time and longer, there was this little town full of fabulous history and personality way upriver. Thank you so much for this video, and for sharing some of the stories of the people and businesses of this special place. ❤
I get the impression of history repeating itself, ROFL. My parents, esp. Mom took us around to towns like this every weekend it seemed growing up in Tenn. This type place can be found all up and down the appalachian range. Frankly, I don't miss it. What I do enjoy is the wonderful production and story telling you two seem to do with whatever you venture into. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Elisabeth. Glad you liked the storytelling in it despite outgrowing the small town vibe. Sounds like your mom wore you out and you had your fill! ;)
Jean Fairchild Gilmore, Fairchild genealogist, lived in the Finger Lakes area when I started writing to her. My family lived in Chautauqua County in the 1800’s. I have never been, and I do not plan to as I am older. Thank you for showing us what the area is like! We watch The Wandering Woodsman hike the Trails, high points, and historic places of Pennsylvania, too. He makes 15 minute videos several times a week.
Gorgeous little town! I did a bus tour of the Finger Lakes years ago with my mom..wish i went thru this town! Maybe some year i will get to this place!
I grew up there. I still have aunts and uncles and lots of cousins there. I left in 1998 and have only been back once in 2014. The antique mall was a Woolworth's when i was a kid. There was a soda fountain there that my great-aunt worked at. My favorite Italian restaurant used to be on Lake St. I also worked at Pumpelly House when the Taylors owned it. Wow Summer! Never thought I'd see this on your channel!
I know Owego well, now live in a very small town in the Finger Lakes, between Cayuga and Seneca lakes. I didn't realize the Parkview had been renovated! I knew it in the 90's, I do visit to do antiquing often. I JUST found this channel!
Fantastic! Well welcome to the channel. Hope next time you'll get a chance to poke your head into the Parkview, especially now since they have that restaurant, bar and B&B.
We really enjoyed this video and the leisurely visits to the different businesses. Nice to see the Susquehana too as we live at the other end, in Lancaster County PA. Thanks for doing this video. Would love to see more.
Absolutely beautiful video I loved it very much and yes more of the same as a painter, quilter, and weaver I so appreciated the crafts, the history, and enthusiasm of the business owners, what an Awesome place and I hope to visit next summer from Sudbury Ontario Canada
You look like or you remind me of, the old kids books with where in the world is Carmen sandiego! Haha Your tours are terrific and very interesting! Thank you for sharing!
My mom grew up in Owego. We spent many weekends and school breaks visiting family who still live in the area. It was great to see it through someone else’s eyes. This is also a reminder that I need to hit up these businesses next time we visit. 🥰
I love Owego, where several relatives of mine live and have lived for centuries. Belva Lockwood - My wife and I stayed in the Douglas Room (although it wasn't named that at the time). Very charming. Our favorite place to stay at is the Parkview, especially what Beth called "the biggest room" which is two connected rooms with access to the front porch - however - we often stay at the Rhodes Hotel (just kidding) - Gail & Jerry are relatives.
Yes, I enjoy long form regional vacations online. Actually, I prefer longer form 30 min to an hour or more formats for interesting topics: architecture, gardens, cooking, food preservations, art (especially fiber art), skilled trades people, homeopathy, and more.
Kind of silly putting train tracks on display in reference to ' underground railway " WHEN that system to help slaves DID NOT involve trains at all !! I was raised in Chagrin Falls, Ohio and a mansion across the street by the river had a tunnel that was part of that underground and definitely no trains.
One artist's interpretation for her art piece, I suppose. But the name of underground railroad is confusing-especially for someone who has never heard of it or knows the history; I had to explain to Sander (the person behind the camera) who is not from this country, the history of the underground railroad, because he immediately thought that it was train track under the house.
A main highway works its way right through Owego, which may be convenient because you get a lot of pass-through traffic, but is also in the same right, unfortunate IMO because it's such a highly walkable area right in the village center, that it would be a lot nicer from a human standpoint if it was more like....say the Netherlands. I wish the cars/trucks were able to be directed out to the outskirts of the village, but at this stage, the main artery to the Finger Lakes and up through Canada is through here.
The history lesson on Belva Lockwood... 💕
Pretty phenomenal right? How quickly our country's own (recent) history is forgotten or overwritten by present times.
Victoria Woodhull ran for president in 1872.

We have towns like this nation wide..we need to support them
Absolutely spot on. Folks consistently love postcard towns like this, so I hope they are worth a stop through vs pass through. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing your trip experience with us. Your videos are put together so nicely!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and glad you enjoy the videos :)

Beautiful showcasing of a favorite town! Owego is the best❤
This place it beautiful!
This was a gorgeous presentation! Thank you so much for sharing it with us! 🤗💛🤗
What a sweet old town!
You need to try the village of Lewiston New York, just fantastic. Features, art park, the jazz and art festivals
Thanks for the tip!
Very well done! Owego is wonderful!
I grew up in Owego and go back each year for a get together with long-time friends. It was and remains a wonderful community.
As a recently former resident of the area, I love this video. I made my own little video of Owego when they had the 'largest' peace sign made there. The Fireman's fountain is a very unique piece that belongs to the town. Next time you're there be sure to look up the history of that.
Thanks so much for the tip on the fountain. And glad you took the time to watch the video.
you can see a hint of the peace sign on google maps, near the end of Foundry Street
Absolutely fantastic.....I Love OWEGO......thank you so much :)
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought up some wonderful memories on your end -albeit on a different part of the river. :)

You're most welcome. And do hope you get a chance to visit.

I love that you covered my hometown, and also used the word "bifurcates" at the same time. :)
Glad you enjoyed!
My beautiful home town !!
Loved the history behind Belva. Its a shame I had not heard it before.
Had no idea myself. How quickly history can fade from view.
Gorgeous little town! I did a bus tour of the Finger Lakes years ago with my mom..wish i went thru this town! Maybe some year i will get to this place!
There are so many great towns in the area. Would take a lifetime to visit them all thoroughly!
Beautiful small town 👍
Really enjoyed this video, really well put together, and loved the music, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to watch.

So glad it jogged a bit of memory and maybe you’ll be back to see your family again before too long.
That was a cool adventure ...Thanks for inviting us along
I'm glad you enjoyed the trip!
I loved this small town and would love to visit one day. Yes, do more videos of American towns. Thanks for this.
Do hope you get a chance to visit. It's really quite cool.
Que preciosidad 🥰
I love small town America!!!
Love the town and would like to visit.
I bet that town looks amazing at Christmas 🎄
They do have a pretty spectacular Christmas show and display

Love Lancaster County as well. Love gawking at all the beautiful barns and hex signs!
I’d love to go there!
I really liked this video! I might visit someday!
It is definitely a charming little town!
I loved this style of video...even though I have been to Owego a few times I saw new things I need to check out in your video.
Ah fantastic! Always nice to see it with fresh eyes. :)
We passed through Owego when we headed home from hometown, Penn Yan. Dropped some money there supporting a local business. We plan to visit again.
Very good! Still haven't made it up to Penn Yan yet ourselves. A lot of our fellow farmers head up that way for organic feed and such.
Absolutely beautiful video I loved it very much and yes more of the same as a painter, quilter, and weaver I so appreciated the crafts, the history, and enthusiasm of the business owners, what an Awesome place and I hope to visit next summer from Sudbury Ontario Canada
You’re not that far away - practically “country neighbors”
You look like or you remind me of, the old kids books with where in the world is Carmen sandiego! Haha
Your tours are terrific and very interesting! Thank you for sharing!
I remember Carmen!
My mom grew up in Owego. We spent many weekends and school breaks visiting family who still live in the area. It was great to see it through someone else’s eyes. This is also a reminder that I need to hit up these businesses next time we visit. 🥰
Hope the video spurred some new ideas when you're back in town. And sometimes you have to leave a place and come back to really appreciate it!

So nice that you have personal reference to the place (and even to the B&Bs)!
My husband and his family are from Owego❤️
Nice indeed! Hope you get back there from time to time.
Very nice video

Thanks for letting us know your preferences. And taking the time to watch! We appreciate it.
Looks like the town from Waiting For Guffman.
Had to look up that reference!
watched this twice
Thanks for watching!
Is this near Oswego, NY?
It's a good 2 hour drive from Oswego to Owego.
Yeh love towns without a damn Dunkin’ Donuts…….
Us too, but I hate to burst your bubble, if you travel a few streets over from where we were, you'll find one! Oooof!
Hy ❤❤❤
Are you sure owego is part of the finger lakes area?
Absolutely. The village of Owego is considered "the gateway to the Finger Lakes."
How come the cars look so big next to those huuuge buildings???
Foreground perspective?
you should have seen the restaurant that used to be an old train station 😓
Next time we're in town!
I hate when people post cute places online and then people swamp the place and ruin it.
I'm not sure it'll get "swamped" .... The cold winters up here usually keep a fair bit of warm blooded folks away. ;)
